Laid Off? Take a Deep Breath and Then Take Action
· Acknowledge the emotions! It’s totally fine to go through the emotional stages. Whether you’re angry, sad, fearful, shocked, happy… feel it. These emotions will inevitably help you move forward.
· Check unemployment benefits. Reach out to your local state employment agency to see if you’re eligible for unemployment benefits. Click here for more information on filing for unemployment.
· Talk it through. This is a great opportunity to reach out to past friends, colleagues, collegemates, and whoever else is in your network.
· Make a list of companies who are hiring, and then narrow it down to the ones that you’re interested in and passionate about.
· LinkedIn should be your new best friend. If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile set up, then this is the time to make one. If you already have one, update it.
· Network like it’s your job. After you’ve embraced the emotions that follow from being laid-off and have created a road map of companies you’re interested in and where you want to go, next up is to network with people outside of your current network. Don’t forget to add a personalized message when adding new people on LinkedIn.
· Connect with a recruitment agency. Recruitment agencies are fantastic resources to help job seekers as well as they have tons of connections with companies, and even better, they know who’s hiring. Here at Emerging Blue, we love supporting job seekers.

Feeling unsure about the job market right now is totally understandable. It’s a wacky time, no doubt about it. No one is sure how this will play out and what it means for thousands, maybe millions of workers.
We have been getting lots of calls from clients putting jobs on hold, and from job seekers who are sensing that their jobs may be in jeopardy. We understand that it’s a real concern. While we have seen these times come and go before, the difference with Covid-19 is that it has the ability to rock our professional and financial lives but also our health and wellbeing. Unsettling for sure.
Here’s what we know. We know there will be a cure for this virus. We know that we will eventually be healthy and safe. We know that the economy will come back. We also know that our industry is creative and resourceful. It will be just a matter of time to make it through to the other side.
At Emerging Blue, we know what we have to offer and we offer it freely. It’s safe to say that we’re all in uncharted territory right now. We don’t know what the future holds, and for many, it’s a stressful time. Comfort and inspiration can be found in the knowledge that we’re in this together. Around our office, we often say, “good people know good people.” It’s this knowledge that reminds us that we’re part of a great industry, filled with amazing people, and our combined strength will get us through.
At Emerging Blue, we have a duty to keep our employees safe, our clients informed, and our candidates’ top of mind. Thankfully, we have a strong team, and we embraced remote recruiting work several years ago with a rollout of our On-Site Recruiting option. Through this, we provide direct HR and recruiting support to our clients, as an extension of their team. Especially during these times, we're ready and able to support projects big and small.
